We're building up STEAM in our afterschool and summer care programs
As parents and educators look for ways to keep children engaged in learning while preparing them for success in the future, one effective approach is to integrate the arts into STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to produce STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) learning.
To understand the value of STEAM, it’s helpful to take a closer look at each of its components, beginning with science:
Science enables students to develop our interest in, and understanding of, the living, material and physical world and develop the skills of collaboration, research, critical enquiry, experimentation, exploration and discovery.
Engineering in STEAM education is of growing importance due to the sheer demand for engineers worldwide. Various definitions of engineering refer to it as the application of science, technology, mathematics – and some even describe it as an art – with a view to designing and constructing objects, machines, structures, and other items or things. Most commonly, it is defined as the application of science and mathematics principles to create things.
Technology has revolutionized the way we live, work, and learn. From interactive learning software and simulations to AI and resources, technology can make STEAM education more engaging and accessible for students.
By allowing children to explore their expressive side through the arts, they are able to expand their creative thinking skills, which are necessary to solve complex engineering, science, and math problems. These creative thinking skills teach your child to think outside of the box and to explore different, non-traditional paths to a solution.
Math is essential in identifying patterns, interpreting data, producing measurements, managing finances, and understanding the spaces and structures around us. It’s also at the core of many career fields, from architecture to IT to medicine.
